PLUS! Jane wants to hire you as a writer/editor. Apply here! No experience or degrees needed (but if you have a degree I can make you and your parents feel better about it by saying it was a factor).
I know exactly what level I need and will provide all the answers when I actually get some applicants. I understand it is hard to apply without knowing all the details but there is some method to this madness (I think!). Stay tuned and thanks for writing!
I'll just add this to give you a preview since you were the very first person to comment! Some story editing experience could be helpful, but not if it means being tied to some of the standard ways we all were taught to edit at other publications. This would be a very different kind of light editing. And someone who can work in the CMS with me because I'm really big on the right photos and captions and I care about every tiny little word on every tiny little button, so someone who is willing to dig into that level of detail in the CMS would be helpful. It's just me doing it all right now so we would be sharing some of the editing duties basically and I can work with someone's strengths and preferences. I hope that's somewhat helpful Xo.
After we talk about it a little bit more here and I give more feedback, I'll give you a more formal way to apply. I hope that's not confusing. I'll put the next step in these comments and in an upcoming email, (what we are supposed to call a "newsletter", even though mine are anything but). Thank you so much for asking!
I want in! I’ve been a writer, English teacher, editor, marketing manager, and just today got rejected for a part-time copy editing job with Disney! Plus, I’ve been on Team Jane since the first issue of Sassy. What do I need to do?
When you mentioned spotting the former customer at the Lincoln Park Zoo, for a split second I thought you wrote that you'd seen him step out of a pedocab.
Ashley! It's you! Well guess what I've been working on yesterday and today? Your piece was ready to publish but you sent me a new manuscript so I've got to go back in and replace the old one with the new and then replace the pictures, etc. So yes coming up soon! It's such a great story! Thank you for it!
Aw, this is a great job memoir. Bukowski (Post Office) would be proud of you. The tedium is real. So is the freedom. I miss jobs like this. I miss being the fucking manager and throwing someone out.
Your new best friend, Charlie, if I may introduce you, is Ali Davis, who wrote “True Porn Clerk Stories” — a rare woman behind the counter. Terrific writer like you, too. We are in the brother/sisterhood!
Thanks for the comment and the recommendation. Poor Charlie has been sick, but I know this will make him feel better when he is up to checking out the comments. Xox
So glad you did! Regarding all of these amazing job applicants, I'm going to add one extra criterion, so I'll put it here in the comments for everyone.
I would LOVE to help with writing and editing. It will bring me back to my undergrad days in the early 2000s as a columnist and copyeditor for my college's newspaper!
I would LOVE to know more about this opportunity. Writer, editor, inappropriate joke maker and passionate about authenticity in storytelling. Put me IN, coach! I'm ready.
I'm a career writer/editor who would love to hear more about what you need that I can do.
I'm also in my somethingTH decade of hoping parents might concede that my double English-Journalism major with a social sciences minor concentration worked out okay.
Hahaha dying over that and let’s make those parents proud! Also, I'm gathering you understood my joke about pretending that a degree was worth something? I wasn't sure if that would land.
As a high school English teacher and College Comp instructor - please God give me something to keep me busy this summer 😂😂😂 I would love to edit/shape for you!
Kind of you to offer but I am allergic to work.
Excellent response. You’re hired!!!
Oh no! (hides from Jane Pratt)
I’m curious what level of editing and shaping you are looking for?

This is helpful, thank you!
Oh good!

I could do it if my iffy tech skills can be worked with 😜✨️
I’m interested and have edited magazines and newspapers. I copy- and content-edit others’ writing much better than I do my own.
I know you and I love your work already! Speaking of which, I have to write up the results of our Book club picks and I'm behind on that too!
I’m curious to learn more if you are still gathering interest.
Charlie, great piece. I didn’t know that porn killed Betamax! Damn shame. Beta was much better quality.

I love everything about your description of yourself. I'll let you guys know the next step very soon. Thanks for writing!! And being you!
When you mentioned spotting the former customer at the Lincoln Park Zoo, for a split second I thought you wrote that you'd seen him step out of a pedocab.
I would've flipped out too.
Jane!! I would love NOTHING MORE than to write for you. You have my email :)
Amazing! For some reason I thought we already discussed this, but maybe it was just me psychically knowing the future. I'm in!

And thank you... I hit return too early before, whoops
ooooh. I'm going to have to check her stuff out!

You’re going to be inundated with applications here, Jane. (I just emailed you.)

This was a really entertaining piece! I love that becoming desensitized to nudity made fully clothed women more alluring- such a surprising take!
I loved that too and also was surprised/enlightened by it!
I would LOVE to help with writing and editing. It will bring me back to my undergrad days in the early 2000s as a columnist and copyeditor for my college's newspaper!
That sounds perfect. That was probably that when I saw his degree actually meant something too!
I would LOVE to know more about this opportunity. Writer, editor, inappropriate joke maker and passionate about authenticity in storytelling. Put me IN, coach! I'm ready.
This is a fantastic story. Having been in a few “back rooms” I can see, hear, and smell it all vividly.

It landed! 🛬
Longtime editor, sometime writer here--would love to hear more about this opportunity! Thank you!
You got it!
I think it might be me. *awaiting transmission *
Haha off to a grand start!
P.S. I just finished a fantastic time with Feral House publishing and would love to keep the rhythm cruising over here. I can provide recs.
Thank you!!

Also for you and other people to know, this is not a full-time thing so camp counselor or whatever else, Awesome!
Side gig to keep myself from becoming an actual potato.
Ha ha I do like potatoes though!
Are there people who… don’t?
Ha ha gosh, I hope not!
