It's Jane Pratt's First Ever Book Club — And You're Invited!
Your long-awaited pick for the first AJPT Controversial Books Only Book Club is here! We'll be gathering in-person (or video if you can't) at Jane's place to talk about it. First: Want to see who won?
Here ye, here ye, the August AJPT Controversial Books Only Book Club winner has been chosen.
We guess not too many people wanted to read ‘The Salt Path’ (10% of you) and while ‘All The White Friends I Couldn’t Keep’ had some good interest (26%), ultimately the winner is….
‘How To Lose Your Mother’ by Molly Jong Fast with a whopping 64% of your votes! [Plus one reader who questioned Molly’s qualifications to be a political correspondent. -Jane]
Yay! We can’t wait! [And I appreciate you all making me not a liar for telling Molly when I met her a few weeks ago that we were reading her book in book club. It would have been awkward to say “Your book is one of three we are considering for AJPT book club!”, agree? -Jane]
So, you may ask, how does a Book Club work? (Truthfully, most of you have probably been in a Book Club before — but since Jane never has, we will go over the logistics.)
Here’s the gist!
Buy the book or check it out from the library. Audio book counts.
Finish the book!
We will all convene on September 12 at 8pm ET for Book Club at Jane’s house or via Zoom to discuss our thoughts! (Link forthcoming.)
I am really excited about this, personally, because I’ve known Molly for a long time and have been very much wanting to read her memoir. Maybe Jane or I can even convince her to join if she’s not doing MSNBC commentary that night. [She took my phone number when we met, but hasn't called, so that is on you, especially because I'm just now finding out that you know her while I’ve been bragging about meeting her once. Ask your friend Molly to join us, yes! - Jane]
Also: I am always behind on my various Book Club reads so I am not a perfect participant …but I’m going to try! We can all wear Sassy Tees if we’re feeling extra cheesy!
[The gathering really will be at my house in the Chelsea area of Manhattan for as many of you as can get there - and those who can’t can join us on Zoom. I reserve the right to host this in the lounge of my building if my place isn’t clean. -Jane]
Leave us your thoughts, questions, and any ideas for next month’s contenders in the comments, please! See you IRL —or on Zoom— in September!
Awesome! I'm really glad this is on a Friday night, too. I love geeking out with people who want to start their weekend like this. :)
Can't wait! I'll be attending via Zoom but wish I was able to come in person. I love the idea of a controversial book club.
