Jane’s Phone: It’s My Birthday! Who Wants to Get a Matching Tattoo?

I’ve never gotten a tattoo in all my years. Back when I was 24 and starting Sassy, I used to say that I would wait until I was “60!!!!” to get one, because I thought it was sort of rebellious and funny to plan on getting a tattoo when other people who had gotten them in their appropriate twenties would be complaining that their old tattoos were getting wrinkly. How revolutionary to get a tattoo onto wrinkled skin, I thought.

In any case, it doesn’t feel so renegade now, and my skin is not nearly as wrinkly as I thought it would be at this age. I mean, I have wrinkles, but they’re not just like a crisscross pattern consistently spread all over my skin the way I pictured they would be. But in any case, does anyone else want to get an 11:11 tattoo with me? (Or 11/11 or 11.11 or 1111, whatever works for you. Esther thinks 11:11 looks biblical, which makes me laugh because I have a long-standing association with it that is not at all biblical! Plus, my friend Jennifer Aniston sweetly had me over at her house one night while she got an 11:11 tattoo on her wrist — and I truly hope she won’t mind me saying that story. I’ll ask her and take it down if she cares. She is the best, by the way.)

You’ve been my people for almost 40 years now, so I don’t think that’s changing anytime soon and why not cement it in our flesh? Or perhaps 1111 stands for some other meaningful thing to you, which is perfect too. (Or don’t do it at all and just see who else here does — I am not peddling tattoos here!) (To be clear, Michael and my daughter, Charlotte, and I have talked about getting these matching 11:11 tattoos for years now, so that is still part of this plan. And I also am going to get my very very first tattoo ever strictly for my daughter. So that’s the whole entire plan.)

I love you! My birthday present this year is being reunited and newly united with all of you, so I have everything I could possibly want. Except maybe a new tattoo.
