Michelle Obama's Reality Series Shows Later Daters Deserve Love - And Mess!
Enlightening about ageism, while acknowledging that looks and sexual chemistry still come first, says Feminista.
“Today, there are more single people over 55 than ever before.” Our introduction to the premise of the new Netflix show Later Daters is a reminder that a sizeable demographic deserves more attention. Does anyone else notice that, culturally, we are finally catching up to the truth that older folks still...live? Perhaps it is because people of a certain age are tired of being erased, so we are making ourselves more visible and demanding recognition in media and pop culture. Maybe it’s because we’re spending the most time and money streaming these shows and producers are finally catering to our interests. I think it’s because we are confronting our collective ageism and remembering that people don’t lose value or disappear when they reach a certain age.
Later Daters is mess! Let’s just establish that up front. It’s a good, wholesome kinda mess though. And if you’ve been following along, you know I’m a messy bih who lives for drama. The show, executive produced by former First Lady Michelle Obama, introduces us to six “silver singles,” people 55+ who have agreed to work with Harvard-educated, former Google bigwig-turned-best-selling- matchmaker Logan Ury to find their true love. They each meet with her before going on blind dates and then they consult with her via FaceTime once their dates are done. She provides them with therapy-slash-coaching throughout the process.
