Jane, they knew you weren’t a conduit for girls or reputation washing. That’s a win.

Can you imagine how you’d feel if you had accidentally brought someone (say, a young employee) into his orbit? I referred 2 of my undergraduate students to a late middle aged musician and scholar I thought I knew pretty well as a research contact. He hit on both, blatantly and uncomfortably. Not threatening, not criminal, just ick + the reminder that he could assist them with their projects. The second one told me. When I asked the first one if he had hit on her, she said yes, and that she had assumed I knew he would. I had no idea he was into much younger women. I was only interesting to him because I could (and did 2x!) send him those young women. It’s been 20 years and I still feel guilty about it and nothing actually happened, beyond discomfort. And I made sure that he was never trusted around students again.

I want to say something like that's unfathomable, but it happens so frequently that it's not even. It's horrific though. And I'm proud of you and glad that you made sure that he would not be around students again. You have truly nothing to feel guilty about though I understand. And thank you for that story.

I think my only version of that was sometimes finding out people (I can't even call them readers because they didn't, I'm guessing) who were not in the demographic (meaning older men) were looking at sassy magazine not as intended. It made me so sick and I felt so protective of all the models and all the people in that publication. It still makes me mad to think about.

Jane, you do or did get young women to exploit themselves on XoJane for a story and paid them $50.00. One story you published was a young woman with a little daughter whose boyfriend insisted the little girl sleep in the bed with him and the young mother. You didn’t taken that story down until the mother was doxxed in the comments.

I don't remember that, but I'm so sorry. It sounds like one of a number of examples of pieces at XOJane that we took down because of the vitriol in the comments or because of hate the writer told us they were getting elsewhere.

Chopped liver 🤣 did you read Tina Brown’s Substack on being in them? It’s a good one.

I just saw that she wrote it after I posted this and I will definitely take a look. Haven't yet.. Thanks, Jane!
