I will never understand the unsubscribes — I get a few each time I post. I question it not because I expect to be loved by all unconditionally, but because they knew who I was when signing up. Talking ad nauseum about fashion and beauty through the lens of aging, celebrating getting older and all its merits while never once giving an affiliate link or telling you which $200 tee I’m “obsessed with” … it’s all there in the about page. I haven’t veered from who I am and what I write about, and ofc I am going to mention my fashion essay collection throughout pieces because as any author knows it’s hard to sell books these days (unless you’re Belle Burden or Lena Dunham). And on that note, I’m in NYC mid October and would die to be part of this IRL.
That's a heavy vote for doing this in October! Thank you for that and all the other wisdom here about the unsubscribes. They come in the minute a post goes out and I feel like often it is an angry sort of reaction without even reading anything to just say "stop inundating my inbox, I have enough shit going on without your unexpected violations" because I feel that way myself sometimes with emails I get. And then some of the stories that are more political will get unsubscribes over a longer period of time, which feels like great, we made our point. I love nothing better than when someone writes a note to tell me why they unsubscribe. Someone did that the other day and it was so so helpful, though not anyone's job of course to do that. Speaking of jobs, I'm so excited to work with you!

I'm going to be the first to comment here because after talking about how pointed it feels to get an unsubscription from someone who is a free subscriber, author Tina Gaudoin just unsubscribed. I had been happy to see her sign up to subscribe. What do you think?
I recently unsubscribed to a lot of substacks that I wanted to stay subscribed to because @Sarah Fay, PhD told me to as part of a focus strategy for Notes growth. I view all of my unsubscribers as people who have also received the same advice, and if everyone takes that advice, all of us are going to end up without any subscribers at all. Let the great experiment begin.

OK, reread it and it's still so hard for me to understand how that would be a growth strategy, but I'm gonna look her up and see. And in the meantime, I'll just assume everyone who unsubscribes to AJ PT got her bad advice, yes?
OK, so you only subscribe to two or three accounts that are very big and have lots of engagement and are in the exact subject that you write in and then you engage in their notes with their readers. This is supposed to bring people to your publication. Either I’m not doing it right or it doesn’t work or I haven’t been doing it for long enough because ever since I’ve employed this method I have lost probably 10 subscribers.
But yes, it is quite an ego protection to just assume everyone is unsubscribing because they’re taking the same advice.
It’s what I came up with struggling how the hell someone would teach another person to be creative. It seems like a part Martin Short would do in his Franz accent.
