If you missed the popular podcast, Boomtown, which was a deep dive into high-stakes Texas oil industry drama, don’t worry because Landman is a new show based on it and it brings the whole thing to life pretty amazingly. “The oil and gas industry makes $3 billion a day in pure profit,” opens Tommy Norris, an oil executive who does his best to balance his obligations to the corporation he works for and his relationships with the people most impacted by the company’s dealings. The show caught me from the beginning, even though I’m not a huge fan of these types of Yellowstone-ish dramas. I’m glad I decided to give it a go.
Tommy is played by Billy Bob Thornton who is, to me, a bit of an underrated actor in terms of delivery. I don’t think he gets as much credit as he should as a Hollywood heavyweight. His consistency is out of this world. Tommy is a bit cutthroat (he has to be doing what he does) and Thornton brings just the right amount of charisma, charm, and cunning to the role.
